What is MFA and why should you care

on 02.04.2025

In today’s digital world, cyberattacks have become a part of everyday life—and a password alone is no longer enough to keep your data safe. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of protection when logging in.

With MFA, in addition to your password, you’ll need to verify your identity using another method—such as a fingerprint, an SMS code, or an authentication app on your smartphone.

Why is MFA important?

MFA significantly reduces the risk of hackers accessing your accounts—even if they manage to get hold of your password. It’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your digital identity and sensitive information.

How does MFA work in SmartAccounts?

To start using MFA in SmartAccounts, you’ll first need to activate it. You can find a step-by-step guide here and also at the end of this article.

Once MFA is enabled, you’ll be asked for an additional code each time you log in—on top of your regular password. This code is generated by an app on your smartphone. That extra step is what makes your account so much more secure: even if someone learns your password, they still can’t log in without access to your phone.

Now you might be wondering: Isn’t it annoying to enter a code every time? Fair question. Yes, MFA adds a small extra step. That’s why SmartAccounts allows you to “remember” your everyday work device—so you only need to enter the code once on that device.

Are there any risks to using MFA?

One important thing to know: if you lose access to your phone, you could also lose access to your account.

To avoid this situation, you can:

  • Use an authentication app that backs up your codes to the cloud;
  • Or manually back up your codes on a second device.

Why you should use MFA

  • Passwords are vulnerable – Many people create simple passwords and reuse them across multiple accounts.
  • Reduces risk of identity theft – Even if a hacker gets your password, they can’t log in without the second layer of verification.
  • Cyber threats are on the rise – Phishing and data breaches are growing problems. MFA helps protect against them.
  • MFA is becoming the norm – Banks, healthcare providers, and many businesses already require it.

In summary

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a simple yet powerful way to protect your accounts and data. While it might feel like a small hassle, that extra effort is minimal compared to the potential consequences of a security breach.

This small step makes a big difference in account security. While no security method is completely foolproof, bypassing MFA is significantly harder than breaking into a password-only account.

How to activate MFA in SmartAccounts

You can enable MFA in SmartAccounts under Settings → My user data, in the Security section. SmartAccounts uses authentication apps like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and similar.
